Will the 5001 crush plastic bottles?
Plastics can be crushed by lying them horizontally in the chamber, and tightening the cap after flattening/crushing to prevent the container from reinflating or plastic springback. This horizontal flattening is the only way we know of to manually size reduce a container like the plastic jerry-can with the cap at one end (and size one gallon or 5L) that is popular for cleaning chemicals and car oils
For other drinking containers, like milk cartons, water bottles and soda bottles, horizontal flattening in a 5001 is a poor substitute for the satisfying vertical crush you can achieve with the model 2250 and model 5000
People often ask us if they can use the model 5001 for everything in the kitchen, and our answer is, no you should combine it with a model 2250 or model 5000
Can the 5001 crush a steel food can vertically?
No. Steel cans should be crushed horizontally in two steps.
How to crush a steel can
- Make sure that one end of the can is open
Do not try to crush a can that has only been pierced at one end – the top end of the can should be removed or be hanging by less than a quarter of the opening at that end
- Lay the can on its side in the crush chamber, with the closed end of the can facing you, and out of reach of the crush plate as it descends
This means the descending crush plate will miss the closed end of the can - Crush once.
The open end is flattened
The closed end of the can tilts forward, because it was beyond the reach of the crush plate - Raise the handle to lift the crush plate back to starting point
Push the can all the way under the crush plate now
- Crush a second time
The can is now flattened
